What is Subject–Verb Agreement?

जब sentence में subject singular या plural होता है, तो verb भी उसी के according आता है। इसी rule को Subject–Verb Agreement कहते हैं।


Rule 1: Singular Subject → Singular Verb

Plural Subject → Plural Verb

  • The boy plays cricket.
  • The boys play cricket.

Rule 2: Subjects joined by ‘and’

अगर दो subjects and से जुड़े हों, तो verb plural होता है।

  • Rohit and Aman are friends.
  • A pen and a pencil are on the table.

Exception

अगर compound subject एक ही idea या चीज़ को दिखाए, तो verb singular होता है।

  • Bread and butter is my breakfast.
  • Rice and curry is very common.

Rule 3: Subjects joined by ‘or / nor’

इस case में verb nearer subject के according आता है।

  • The teacher or the students are absent.
  • The students or the teacher is absent.

Rule 4: Indefinite Pronouns

Always Singular

Each, Everyone, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody

  • Everyone wants success.
  • Somebody is knocking.

Always Plural

Many, Few, Several, Both

  • Many are waiting.
  • Few understand this rule.

Singular or Plural (Context-based)

  • Some milk is left.
  • Some students are absent.

Rule 5: Collective Nouns

अगर group को एक unit माना जाए → singular verb
अगर members को individually माना जाए → plural verb

  • The team is winning.
  • The team are arguing.

Rule 6: Names of Books, Countries, Organizations

  • India is a great country.
  • The Ramayana is an epic.

Rule 7: There is / There are

Verb हमेशा real subject के अनुसार आता है।

  • There is a mistake.
  • There are many mistakes.

Rule 8: Amount, Time, Distance

  • Ten rupees is enough.
  • Three hours is sufficient.
  • Five kilometers is far.

Rule 9: Plural Form but Singular Meaning

  • Mathematics is easy.
  • News is important.

Rule 10: A number of / The number of

  • A number of students are absent.
  • The number of students is increasing.

Rule 11: Relative Pronouns (Who / Which / That)

  • She is one of the girls who work hard.
  • She is the only girl who works hard.

Important Exam Tips

  • Subject और verb के बीच के words को ignore करें
  • Prepositional phrases से confuse न हों
