Tenses in English Grammar – Complete Rules with Examples


Tense verb का वह form होता है जिससे यह पता चलता है कि कोई काम कब हुआ, कब हो रहा है या कब होगा। Competitive exams जैसे SSC, Railway, Banking, Police में Tense से बहुत सवाल पूछे जाते हैं।

Types of Tense

English Grammar में कुल 3 Tenses होते हैं:

  • Present Tense
  • Past Tense
  • Future Tense

हर Tense के 4 भाग होते हैं:

  • Indefinite
  • Continuous
  • Perfect
  • Perfect Continuous

1. Present Tense

1.1 Present Indefinite Tense

Rule: Subject + V1 / V1 + s/es

Use: Daily habits, universal truth, regular actions

Examples:

  • I play cricket.
  • He plays cricket.
  • The sun rises in the east.

Note: He / She / It के साथ verb में s/es लगता है।


1.2 Present Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + is / am / are + V1 + ing

Use: Action happening now

  • I am reading a book.
  • She is cooking food.

Time words: now, at present, currently


1.3 Present Perfect Tense

Rule: Subject + has / have + V3

Use: Work completed recently, time not mentioned

  • I have finished my work.
  • She has gone to Delhi.

1.4 Present Perfect Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + has / have been + V1 + ing + since / for

  • I have been studying for 2 hours.
  • She has been working since morning.

2. Past Tense

2.1 Past Indefinite Tense

Rule: Subject + V2

Use: Action completed in past

  • I went to school yesterday.
  • He played football last year.

2.2 Past Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + was / were + V1 + ing

  • I was reading a book.
  • They were watching TV.

2.3 Past Perfect Tense

Rule: Subject + had + V3

  • The train had left before I reached the station.
  • She had finished her work.

2.4 Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + had been + V1 + ing + since / for

  • He had been waiting for 2 hours.

3. Future Tense

3.1 Future Indefinite Tense

Rule: Subject + will / shall + V1

  • I will help you.
  • She will come tomorrow.

3.2 Future Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + will be + V1 + ing

  • I will be studying at 10 PM.

3.3 Future Perfect Tense

Rule: Subject + will have + V3

  • She will have completed the work.

3.4 Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Rule: Subject + will have been + V1 + ing

  • I will have been working here for 5 years.

Common Mistakes in Tense

  • Incorrect: He has been work since morning.
  • Correct: He has been working since morning.
  • Incorrect: She did not went there.
  • Correct: She did not go there.
  • Incorrect: I am knowing him.
  • Correct: I know him.
